Cures for a Sore Throat

A sore throat is an infection that could be in the form of bacterial or viral. Both these sore throats have different reasons. Amongst the two the viral is the serious form of sore throat infection. Antibiotics respond well to the bacterial sore throat infections but not with the viral sore throats. That is why the most popular sore throat cure is the natural cure.

Many sore throats can be cured with natural remedies. Tincture capsicum has been used to alleviate a sore throat and increase vocal range when congested. Other sore throat cures include chamomile tea drinking this tea every few hour's gives good relief. Gargling with not just warm salt water but also water in which cayenne pepper has been added is said to be helpful. Other natural things like mustard, Slippery Elm bark (Ulmus rubra), Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) - this contains mucilage which helps soothe a sore throat. Honeysuckle flower is used in Chinese medicines and is a good sore throat healer.

Oftentimes a sore throat is one of the first symptoms of our body's fight against the common cold or flu which maybe due to the change of temperature, exposure to cold, or just by drinking some beverage that is extremely cold.

Children may have a headache and stomach pain. Canker sores and fever blisters in the throat also can be very painful. A sore throat can also be caused by bacteria. The two most common bacteria Streptococcus (which causes strep throat) and Arcanobacterium haemolyticum. Arcanobacterium causes sore throats mainly in young adults and is sometimes associated with a fine red rash. About 10 to 15 percent of sore throats are caused by bacterial infections, either streptococcus (strep throat) or staphylococcus bacteria.

Of the two types of sore throat, chronic is more intense and they occur for a longer period as compared to the acute sore throat which last for about 3-4 days. The bacterial and viral infections are generally categorized under the chronic sore throat. However, be it acute or chronic, the symptoms of sore throat are almost similar. The only difference is, in a chronic sore throat it needs immediate attention if it is due to bacterial infections as it can be deadly.

Drink plenty of water. It may feel difficulty drinking water while you have sore throat. Drink water warm to avoid the difficulty drinking water.

It is a good idea to go to your doctor whenever you have a sore throat. You need to determine the cause so as to rule out those that are serious. In the event that your sore throat is deemed to be a common cold or flu variety, here’s some home remedies that you might find useful.

You may also gargle with salt water.

It your doctor prescribes antibiotics for a bacterial throat infection, eat yogurt, such as Nancy's yogurt or Kefir from the health food store. The commercial yogurt in your grocery store does not have enough of the friendly bacteria in it to replace the one's killed by the antibiotics. The antibiotic kills the good and bad bacteria. The the bad bacteria will cause an overgrowth and you will be open to other infections. You need the good bacteria to keep the bad bacteria under control.
